THE HALEAKALA DAY JOURNEY
The Haleakala Day Journey is also a very popular Maui bike tour featured by Mountain Riders. The Haleakala Day bike begins at the 6,500 ft elevation of Haleakala and ends 26 miles later at Paia Beach Park!
The Haleakala Downhill Maui Day Bike Tour begins with Mountain Riders Maui bike tour base, snacks and begin our guided van tour of Maui to Haleakala. Our Mountain Riders bike tour Guides will provide clients with an extensive history of Haleakala National Park, its geology and an explanation of the rare plants and animals only found on Maui. There clients are expertly fitted to their bicycles, given helmets and begin their 26-mile bike ride down the slopes of Haleakala , continuing thru the switchbacks of Haleakala Ranch, Makawao and ending at the beachside town of Paia. Along the way the Maui day bike tour stops Makawao for a NO-HOST lunch, beverages and snacks. We also supply a helmet and state of the art Volcano Chrome Cruiser Bikes.
Itinerary for the Daytime Bike Tour
These are all approximate times given traffic and guests riding abilities. Some riders are much slower than others.
CHECK-IN TIME AND LOCATION: Your adventure begins in Paia with a 7:30am check in before a scenic guided drive through Maui’s beautiful upcountry
NARRATED RIDE TO LAUNCH POINT (45 min): Along the way, your guide shares local history as you pass through Makawao and Kula on the slopes of Haleakala.
FIRST BIKE RIDE (20 min): At 6500 feet, you are fitted with gear and begin your first downhill ride through 29 sweeping turns of Haleakala Ranch, surrounded by incredible island views.
RIDE BACK TO LAUNCH POINT (10 min)
REPEATED BIKE RIDE (20 min): The fabulous 29 switchbacks will be repeated for a more exhilarating ride the second time.
VAN TOUR THROUGH KULA (15 min): After a quick shuttle back up, enjoy the ride again with more confidence and flow.
EXPLORE MAKAWAO (30 min): Next, relax on a short drive through Kula to Makawao, where you will have time to explore, grab coffee or breakfast, and browse local shops.
FINAL BIKE RIDE (20 min): Finish with a final bike ride from Makawao back down to Paia, ending where your tour began. More riding, more views, more Maui

A LATER START WITH THE SAME SCENIC HALEAKALA BIKE EXPERIENCE
This tour starts a little later for those who don’t wish to get up early for the Sunrise on Haleakala. The biking portion of the ride will be exactly the same as the Sunrise tour, beginning at the 6500 ft elevation. After check at our office in Paia you will begin your van tour through upcountry Maui including Makawao, Kula and the Haleakala Ranch that includes the switchback turns. After reaching the launch point the guides will fit you with a bike and helmet followed by a safety briefing before you begin your unique experience that cannot be duplicated anywhere. We offer both Guided and Self-Guided tours.
As you ride down the fabulous 29 switchback turns will enjoy the beautiful bi=coastal views of the island of Maui. This exilarating ride will take you through the Haleakala Ranch which is a working cattle ranch and then down to the eucalyptus forest. Just in case you did not get enough from the first time riding the fabulous 29 we will revisit them one more time.
After the second run we will load up and take a van tour through the agricultural community of upper Kula on our way to the Paniolo town of Makawao which is rich in culture and history. We will make a stop in Makawao where you can visit the local eateries, coffee shops and boutiques. The bike will continue from Makawao through the pineapple fields and rainbow shower trees on the way down to Paia.

You can bring a backpack with you that will be stored in the van. This will carry all the necessary items you may need and can easily store additional layers of clothing or any purchases you make along the way.

Aside from the fun experience and the views, there are a few things that are included in the bike tour. These include:
- Volcano Chrome Cruiser bikes that are designed with drum brakes to handle the downhill ride.
- Granola bars
- Bottled water

You can wear anything that will make you feel comfortable. However, closed-toed shoes and helmets are the only mandatory attire. Gloves, windbreakers, and windproof pants are highly recommended. Keep in mind that the temperatures in the early morning can be quite brisk and, when combined with the downhill speeds, you may find it chilly.
Jackets, sweatshirts, jeans, leggings, long-sleeved shirts, and the like are all safe options. Dressing in layers is always a good idea.
Check the weather before your tour and dress accordingly.

It is our goal to make sure that everyone has an enjoyable – and safe – experience on this sunrise bike tour. For that reason, we have certain restrictions in place for your safety. If you have any questions or concerns about the below restrictions, please feel free to contact our office at 808 877-4944.
- Participants must be competent, experienced, and confident bike riders. They should be able to get on and off the bike safely, keep it under complete control at all times, and be able to maneuver the bike through 180-degree turns, as well as at speeds of 18-25mph.
- Riders must be a minimum of 15 years of age. Anyone under 18 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
- Riders must not be pregnant.
- The maximum rider weight is 280lbs due to bike manufacturer limitations.
- Rider minimum height is 4′ 10” tall.
- Riders must wear closed-toed shoes only. No exceptions.
- Riders must be capable of engaging in activity at higher elevations.
- Riders cannot be taking medication that may cause drowsiness or fatigue.
- All riders must understand all risks involved in this tour, and must sign an acknowledgement of risk form.

How do I know if the Maui Haleakala Day Bike Tour is the right tour for me?Are you into adventure? Are you into seeing some breathtaking views? Are you checking off your bucket list? Then this Maui bike tour could be the ride of your life.
This bike tour is for those serious about fun, adventure and memory-making. But, it is also for those who know how to handle their bike. The saying, you never forget how to ride a bike, does not apply here. You need to actively ride a bike and be competent in doing so. You also need to be comfortable riding alongside motor vehicle traffic while going downhill at 15-25 miles per hour at a 5-6% gradient.
Riders must meet all restrictions, including age, height, and weight, as well as be able to have strong control in their bike handling and riding skills.
