Comfiest Clothes To Wear Biking
Comfiest Clothes To Wear Biking
Here at Mountain Riders, we believe that an incredible Maui bike tour starts with being comfortable! When you’re gearing up for an adventure, especially our world-famous Haleakala sunrise tour, what you wear can make all the difference. You want to focus on the breathtaking views and the thrill of the ride, not on clothes that are too tight, too loose, or not right for the weather. We have guided over 700,000 happy riders down the volcano, so we know a thing or two about dressing for success!
We’ve put together this guide to help you choose the comfiest clothes for your ride. Proper attire ensures you stay warm at the summit, cool on the way down, and comfortable throughout the entire journey. Let us help you prepare for one of the most memorable experiences you’ll have on Maui!
Dress in Layers for Changing Weather
One of the most important tips we can give you is to dress in layers! The weather on Haleakala can change dramatically from the summit to the base. At the top, especially for the sunrise tour, it can be quite cold, with temperatures sometimes dropping into the 40s (Fahrenheit). As you descend the 26 miles, the temperature will rise, and you’ll find yourself in a much warmer, more tropical climate.
We recommend starting with a base layer, like a t-shirt or a long-sleeved shirt made of moisture-wicking fabric. This material pulls sweat away from your skin, keeping you dry and comfortable. On top of that, add a warmer mid-layer like a fleece or a sweatshirt. Your final outer layer should be a windbreaker or a light waterproof jacket. This will protect you from the wind and any potential rain showers. We provide our riders with awesome wind gear, but layering underneath is the key to a perfect ride! As you get warmer during the descent, you can easily remove layers and stow them away.
Choose Comfortable Bottoms and Shoes
Your comfort on the bike is directly tied to what you wear on your lower half. The best choice for your bike tour is a pair of comfortable long pants. Jeans, yoga pants, or durable athletic pants are all excellent options! They provide protection from the wind and sun while allowing for a full range of motion as you ride. We advise against wearing shorts, as your legs can get cold, especially during the early morning hours at the high-altitude summit. Long pants offer that extra layer of warmth and protection that makes the ride much more enjoyable!
Just as important are your shoes! You absolutely must wear closed-toe shoes for safety. Sneakers or athletic shoes are the perfect choice. They provide the grip you need on the pedals and protect your feet. Please do not wear sandals, flip-flops, or high heels. Sturdy, comfortable, closed-toe shoes are a requirement for all our tours, ensuring your feet stay safe and you have a secure connection to your bike. It’s all about being safe and having fun!
Don’t Forget the Essential Accessories
Accessories are the finishing touch for a truly comfortable and prepared ride! While they might seem like small details, they play a huge role in your overall experience. Sunglasses are a must-have item. The Maui sun is bright and beautiful, and sunglasses will protect your eyes from UV rays and reduce glare, making it easier to see the stunning scenery around you. You might also consider bringing a warm hat or beanie for the summit, especially for the sunrise tour, to keep your head and ears warm while you wait for the main event!
Gloves are another fantastic accessory. We provide gloves for all our riders because they help keep your hands warm at the summit and provide a better grip on the handlebars. We also provide top-of-the-line helmets to ensure your safety. Sunscreen is another essential you shouldn’t forget. Even on a cloudy day, the sun at this altitude can be strong. Apply it before you start your tour to protect your skin. With these accessories, you’ll be ready for anything!
