How to Find the Right Bike Size?

Kids and adults of all ages enjoy riding bikes. But just as you want to make sure you have the proper shoes, the proper helmet, the proper attire, and a working GPS for your route, you will also want to make sure you have a bike that fits you. After all, it is the only way you will truly find enjoyment while riding.

If you have ever ridden a bike that was too small or too big, then you know just how easy it can take a fun ride and turn it into something miserable.

Here is how to find the right bike size.

How Are Bikes Measured?

Generally, the measurement goes from either the bolt that attaches the crank arms or the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube. And their measurements usually come in centimeters. However, mountain bikes are often measured in inches – or just marked as small, medium, large, etc.

The key is to know your own measurements so you can find the bike that is made for your size.

Know How Tall You Are

Your height matters when it comes to choosing the perfect bike size. To do this, you will need to measure your height, from the ground to the top of your head. Standing against the wall and marking the wall with a pencil can be an easy way to test your height.

You will also need to measure the inside of your leg. This can easily be done by holding something between your legs such as a book. With it placed against the groin area as if it were a saddle, measure from the top of the book (or whatever item you choose) to the floor.

If you seem to be in-between sizes of bikes, then it is always a good idea to take a look at your reach. This can indicate which option you should choose from. Spread your arms wide and have someone help you to measure the distance from fingertip to fingertip. Then subtract your height. This is known as your ape index. Did you get a positive number? Choose the larger bike. A negative number? Choose the smaller size.

Stand-Over Height

For certain kinds of bikes, such as road bikes or mountain bikes, the stand-over height is often the best way to measure.

Stand-over height is the distance between the ground and the bike’s top tube. To see if it is a good fit for you, all you have to do is to straddle it and make sure you clear the top tube by a minimum of two inches.

No measuring tape is necessary!

The Bike You Choose Matters

Believe it or not, a bike is not a bike. There are many different styles and types of bikes – and they are not all created equally, especially when it comes to size. Keep in mind that the bike you choose is based on personal preference, including the type of riding you intend to do.

For example, if you want to be able to maneuver the bike easily or aggressively, then you are going to want a bike that is a smaller size.

Talking to a bike expert and getting properly fitting for your personal needs gives you the greatest success.
