What to Bring on a Maui Bike Tour
What to Bring on a Maui Bike Tour
There are many special things you can enjoy experiencing on the beautiful island of Maui, and a bicycle tour in Haleakala National Park is a top choice. Take in spectacular sights with little exertion as most of your trek will be downhill, traveling from the awe-inspiring summit down through bucolic small communities, past lush pineapple fields, through the Haleakala Ranch, ending at the dazzling Pacific Ocean.
Of course, you’ll want to properly gear up for a Maui bike tour. So, what should you bring?
Essential Gear
The only absolutely mandatory gear you need are closed-toed shoes and bike helmets. The helmets are provided.
Optional extras that you may feel to be essential: gloves to protect your hands, and windbreakers.
Optional Clothing
With that in mind, there are still some optional recommendations for the most comfortable things to bring on a Maui bike tour.
The most important: wear layers. It’s a great idea to put on layers of clothing that you can remove as you travel down from the top of Haleakala, where temperatures will be cool, into warmer, lower elevations. By the time you reach the charming low-country towns, you’ll likely need no more than a T-shirt and a pair of shorts. But at the top – long pants, a jacket, and sweatshirt are key accessories to keep you cozy, particularly if you’re planning a stunning sunrise bike trip.
A small backpack or carry-all for you to place the clothing you remove on the ride down is also a good idea.
Remember that watching that Haleakala Sunrise or sunset can get chilly at some 10,000 feet higher than sea level, and it can be quite windy. You won’t enjoy the stellar experience if you’re shivering. Generally, sunrise temps hover around 40 degrees.
And being at the top of the volcano crater can be somewhat unpredictable in terms of weather as well, so a hat or scarf might be in order. But, because it is often very windy up top, make sure your hat won’t be blown away by a gust.
Beyond Clothing – What to Bring
Because of the summit’s high altitude, be sure to drink plenty of fluids to refuel your electrolytes. And, munching on a healthy carbohydrate can help you avoid the possibility of any altitude sickness. Easy to pack snacks like granola or a grain-rich bar are recommended.
So, bringing an ample container of water and a breakfast or protein bar are both excellent ideas.
Enjoy Your Maui Bike Tour
What to bring on your tour is pretty basic, and you’ll find the view astonishing on your Maui bike tour, especially at sunrise, but at any time of day. Bring warm clothes that are easy to remove, water and a healthy snack, and then just get ready for a truly once-in-a-lifetime view and experience.
