n 1985 Makawao Union Church, the Henry Perrine Baldwin Memorial, was placed on the Hawaii Register of Historic Places, and in February 1989, it was also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. A beautiful 10” by 15” cast bronze plaque was mounted on the exterior wall of the main church entrance. As this plaque was dedicated, gratitude was expressed for the seventy-three years of service here that proceeded this special moment.
When this church building was dedicated in 1917, Harry Baldwin, eldest son of Henry Perrine and Emily Baldwin, gave the principal address. He said of Makawao Union Church, that it was built: “To provide a permanent meeting house where the people of this community, and their children and children’s children and future comers, can gather for the purpose of upholding and improving the moral and religious standing of the community for generations to come. And it is our hope that this church will always be a potent factor for good and a blessing to Makawao and Maui.”
